Remainders are where division stops being tidy, and where a lot of students first have to think about what an answer means. Twenty-three children into groups of four gives five remainder three — but whether the answer is five groups, six groups or five and three quarters depends entirely on what the question was about. These sheets cover the mechanics first and then push into that interpretation, because a student who can calculate a remainder but cannot decide what to do with it will still get the word problem wrong.

Straightforward division questions where remainders occur, written in the quotient-and-remainder form, with sheets progressing from single-digit divisors to larger ones. Later pages include word problems where the remainder has to be interpreted — rounded up, discarded, or kept as the answer. Clear layouts with room to work. One worksheet per US Letter page, black and white.

Frequently asked questions

How do you write a remainder?
The usual school form is the quotient followed by r and the remainder — 23 divided by 4 is 5 r 3. Later the same result gets written as a fraction, 5 and 3 quarters, or as a decimal, 5.75. All three describe the same division; which one is correct depends on what the question is asking for.
When should the answer be rounded up instead of down?
When the remainder still needs somewhere to go. Twenty-three children needing seats on four-seat benches means six benches, not five — the leftover three children still need to sit. But twenty-three dollars buying four-dollar tickets means five tickets, because the leftover three dollars does not buy a sixth.
Can the remainder ever be bigger than the divisor?
No. If it is, the division was not finished — another whole group could still have been taken out. It is a useful self-check: a remainder must always be smaller than the number you divided by.
When are children usually ready for remainders?
As an editorial guide, roughly ages 8 to 11, once basic division without remainders is secure. The word-problem sheets tend to suit the upper end of that range, since interpreting a remainder is a harder skill than producing one.
