Equivalent fractions are the idea everything later in fractions depends on: that one half and three sixths are the same amount written differently. Students who take this on trust as a rule about multiplying top and bottom struggle the moment they meet addition with unlike denominators. These sheets start with shaded bars and shapes so the equality is something you can see, and only then move to the numerical work of finding a missing numerator or simplifying to lowest terms.

Sheets that begin with fraction bars and divided shapes to shade and compare, then move to missing-number questions of the form three quarters equals blank twelfths, and finally to simplifying fractions to their lowest terms. Later pages mix all three so students choose the approach. Diagrams are printed large and clearly divided. One worksheet per US Letter page, black and white.

Frequently asked questions

How do you find an equivalent fraction?
Multiply or divide the numerator and denominator by the same number. Two thirds becomes four sixths by doubling both, and six eighths becomes three quarters by halving both. The value does not change because you have cut the same amount into more or fewer pieces.
Why does multiplying top and bottom not change the value?
Because you are multiplying by a fraction equal to one — two over two, or three over three. It is worth showing this rather than stating the rule, since students who see it as arbitrary tend to apply it to addition too, where it does not work.
What does simplest form mean?
A fraction is in simplest form when the numerator and denominator share no common factor other than one. Twelve sixteenths simplifies to three quarters because both divide by four. Finding the greatest common factor gets you there in one step instead of several.
At what stage should equivalent fractions be introduced?
As an editorial guide, roughly ages 8 to 11. The diagram-based sheets suit the younger end and often work well before formal fraction rules are taught, while the simplifying pages assume secure multiplication and division facts.
