Four is two twos, and that is the whole strategy for this table. A child who can double reliably can reach any fact in it by doubling twice — 4 x 7 becomes double 7 is 14, double 14 is 28 — which means the four times table can be worked out under pressure even before it is memorized. These sheets are ordered so that the doubling route is obvious early on, then push toward recall, because doubling twice is a good safety net but a slow way to answer twelve questions.

Ordered practice from 4 x 1 to 4 x 12, mixed-order sheets, and missing-number rows where either factor or the product is blank. Some sheets pair each fact with its matching double so the double-double route stays visible. Division facts from the same table appear on the later pages. One worksheet per US Letter page, black and white.

Frequently asked questions

What is the double-double method?
To multiply by four, double the number and then double the result. 4 x 9 becomes 18, then 36. It works because four is two times two, and it gives children a reliable fallback for any fact they have not yet memorized.
Do all multiples of 4 end in even digits?
Yes, and more specifically the last digits cycle through 4, 8, 2, 6, 0 and then repeat. Noticing that cycle helps children check an answer quickly — a multiple of four can never end in an odd digit.
How is the 4 times table connected to the 8?
Every eight fact is double the matching four fact. 8 x 6 is double 4 x 6, so 24 becomes 48. Securing the fours first makes the eights considerably less daunting, which is why they are often taught in that order.
What age is this suitable for?
As an editorial guide, roughly ages 7 to 9. It usually follows the twos, fives and tens, and it is often taught alongside or just before the threes depending on the school's sequence.
