The 6x6 grid is the bridge between a child's first sudoku and the standard 9x9. It uses the numbers 1 to 6 and divides the grid into six boxes that are two cells tall and three wide, which surprises children who assume boxes must be square. That single change teaches an important habit: read the printed lines, do not guess the shape. Thirty-six cells is still small enough to finish in one go, but large enough that scanning a whole column becomes a real skill rather than a glance.

One 6x6 sudoku per page with the 2x3 boxes marked by heavier rules so the regions are unmistakable, and cells sized for comfortable writing. Given numbers are set in a distinct weight from blank cells. Every puzzle has a matching answer page with the completed grid. Printed black on white, one puzzle per US Letter page.

Frequently asked questions

Why are the boxes rectangular on a 6x6 sudoku?
Because six splits into two by three. A sudoku box always has to contain each number exactly once, so on a 6x6 grid the boxes are two rows by three columns. On a 9x9 they are square only because nine happens to be three by three.
What strategy should a child learn here?
Scanning. Pick a number, say 4, and look at each box that does not have one yet. Cross out every row and column that already contains a 4 — if only one cell in that box survives, the 4 goes there. It is the same technique that carries an adult through an easy 9x9.
What age suits 6x6 sudoku?
Roughly ages 7 to 10 as an editorial suggestion, though a child who has enjoyed the 4x4 sheets is often ready sooner. The numbers stay small; what grows is the amount of the grid you have to hold in mind at once.
Do these sheets come with the completed grids?
Yes, each puzzle has its own answer page. Printing those separately is worth doing if the puzzles are for a class, so children can check their own work at a station rather than seeing the answer on the back of their sheet.
